Tom Manson is Associate Counsel with Forstrom Jackson.
He has been practicing law since 1981.

 

The primary focus of Tom Manson's practice is litigation and regulatory proceedings. He advises and represents clients in a wide variety of matters, including:

securities, corporate, and partnership disputes;

-

broker-client and related securities claims;

-

commercial disputes involving share purchase agreements, mineral exploration agreements, mineral resource option agreements, commercial license agreements, leases, and internet assets;

-

employment litigation;

-

civil conspiracy and other tort litigation including defamation;

-

Legal Profession Act proceedings (LSBC/BCSC);

-

Utilities Commission Act proceedings (BCUC/BCCA);

-

Securities Act proceedings (BCSC/ASC)and SRO disciplinary proceedings including IIROC (formerly IDA and RS) and MFDA matters; and

-

 

environmental disputes, remediation cost recovery claims, and regulatory proceedings;

 

Tom Manson has also conducted commercial mediations and arbitration hearings in both the securities and environmental fields. He is currently a Panel Member of the British Columbia Arbitration & Mediation Institute and a Panel Member of the BC International Commercial Arbitration Centre.

 

   Background

 

During over 20 years with Russell & DuMoulin (now Fasken Martineau DuMoulin), Tom acted as counsel in a variety of civil and administrative proceedings including oppression proceedings, proxy contests, commercial disputes, injunction cases, broker-client litigation, solicitor-client litigation, as well as securities and environmental law cases.

 

Significant commercial cases include limited partnership litigation (Whistler Mountain Inn Limited Partnership), corporate litigation (Sun Peaks Resort) and major contract and insurance disputes (Mackenzie River Pipeline Construction and Balmer South Mine Fire Loss).

 

Environmental cases include remediation cost recovery, air emissions (Dawson Creek OSB Plant) and waste discharge (Little River) permit cases, and forest road permit litigation (Belcourt Forest Road).

 

In 2001 Tom Manson joined Market Regulation Services (now IIROC), the regulation services provider for equities trading markets in Canada. He was Chief Counsel, responsible for enforcement of regulatory requirements of the TSX and TSX Venture Exchange. Several years later he returned to private practice.

 

Tom Manson has acted for a variety of clients in judicial and administrative proceedings across Canada including cases in British Columbia, Alberta, and other provinces.

 

   Global Perspective

 

Tom Manson brings a unique global perspective to his profession.

 

Tom and his wife, a dōngběi rén, keep a home in Shandong Province in China. He has been a guest speaker at Shandong University (Wēihǎi), Harbin Institute of Technology (Wēihǎi), Heilongjiang University (Hāěrbīn)arbin(Harbin)(, Nanjing University School of Law (Nánjīng), China University of Political Science and Law (Běijīng), HIT School of Law (Hāěrbīn), and the Law School of Shandong University (Jǐnán).

 

Tom is also closely associated with Cameroonians of north-western Cameroon. This connection goes back to the 1970s. He was initiated by Tokop III, the late Fon, in the Warr Clan (village of Mbot) and became Ta’mfu of the Mfu (warrior society) of Mbot.
